CAST and EVATRONIX S.A. Introduces Fast D80530 Core for 8051 Microcontroller-Based
Designs
Offers 8051 Compatibility with Faster Architecture and Quicker, Performance-Optimized
Implementation
March 27, 2000, DATE 2000, Paris - Evatronix S.A. and CAST Inc. today announced the D80530
Microcontroller Core, a new intellectual property (IP) product for electronic designs based on the
popular Intel™ 8051 microcontroller.
Thousands of products have been built around the Intel 8051 microcontroller over the past thirty
years. Designers today often need to replace obsolete 8051 parts to maintain the longevity of an
existing product, or wish to incorporate 8051 functionality within a new system that uses fewer
parts or requires better performance. The new CAST D80530 core provides a competitive,
cost-effective solution to these challenges.
A Faster 8051-Compatible Design
The new D80530 reusable core is code-compatible with the standard 8051, but uses a faster
architecture to achieve significantly greater performance. This architecture - compatible
with that used by Dallas Semiconductors™ in their DS80C320 chip - eliminates
redundancies, incorporates parallel processing, and requires fewer clock cycles for each machine
cycle, typically executing the same instruction three times faster than the 8051.
The new core is also optimized for efficient implementation with programmable devices from popular
vendors Altera™ and Xilinx™. Sample implementions of the D80530 core using these
devices show it to be one of the fastest 8051-compatible microntrollers available anywhere today:
Altera Apex 20K: XX.X MHz
Altera Flex 10K: 32.5 MHz
Xilinx Virtex: 66.1 MHz
Xilinx Virtex-E: 64.0 MHz
CAST is a member of the Altera MegaFunctions Partners Program and the Xilinx AllianceCore; please
see their respective Web pages for more information.
Proven, Complete Deliverables
Developed by CAST partner Evatronix Ltd. (www.evatronix.com.pl), the D80530 core was thoroughly
verified by comparing it to the operation of actual 8051 and DS80C320 chips using a proprietary
hardware modeler. It is available immediately in either synthesizable VHDL or as an optimized
netlist ready for implementation. The core package includes complete documentation, examples, and
testbenches. Please see the CAST Web site (www.cast-inc.com) technical documentation and additional
information.
